Chapter Seven
Logan placed the bags down and looked back to the woman who appeared to be trying to melt into the wood door. The amount of shame and disgust on her features stopped his glib remark in its tracks.
âSid, you have nothing to be sorry for.â
âThere was a scene caused because of me. And all Iâm doing is driving a wedge between you and your family.â
She looked ready to vomit and her body began to shake. Almost like she expected him to lose his shit and come after her for some sort of physical retaliation. That knowledge spurred him into motion but the flinch, no matter how slight it was, stopped him dead in his tracks.
She canât think I would hit her. Can she?
That notion broke him. At the same time, it filled him with a rage whose heat and intensity would put hellfire to shame.
âCome here.â
Yes, he knew his voice was rough and deep, but he had to have her come to him.
He didnât pull his gaze from her, watching for the slightest of nuances. And there were many. How she wiped all emotion from her face. How she pushed this eerie calmness into her body that stopped the shaking from earlier. How when she met his gaze, he couldnât get a read on her. At all. Her beautiful brown eyes that she had behind those glasses that never stayed in their proper place on her face, were blank.
Even when heâd first run into her, there had been a spark there of something, he still couldnât name. Yet it had been there. Now?
Not a god damn thing.
It made so much anger come to life in his veins, but he fought against it all to make sure none showed in his expression or the tension in his body. The hesitation had been there, but she moved toward him, the walk of someone relegated to their fate.
Sid paused before him, head down and body language resigned to her fate.
âLook at me.â A pause. âPlease.â
That same fucking expressionless gaze met him and he bit back the growl of fury this time. not that it was stopped from that, but it had at least been contained.
Logan reached out one arm and curled it around her shoulders, bringing her in closer to him. He needed to have her up against him. Celebrate how her curves fit perfectly into him. With his other hand, he settled it along the nape of her neck and pushed her head into his chest.
The scent of her shampoo and soap wafted to his nose when he put it in her hair. It eased the ball of tension in him.
âI would sooner cut off my own arms than hit you, Sidni. I hope you understand that.â
He wanted to demand she acknowledge that truth but also understood he couldnât change her mind on how someone would act. Old fears typically had a death grip on someone, unwilling to let them go.
âI told you before, you donât have to apologize for sticking up for yourself.
